Does OSHA allow for computerized MSDS management?

Absolutely! Please click this link to browse an official Interpretation and Compliance Letter from the OSHA website clarifying this regulation of electronic MSDS management. OSHA site.

Is the software compatible with Windows 95/98/2000/NT and /or Windows XP?

Yes, the software is compatible with Windows 3.1x, Windows '95/'98/2000/NT and Windows XP.

Does the software work on a Local Area Network and / or Wide Area Network?

Yes, the software was designed from the beginning to work on most major network environments including Novell Netware 3.x and 4.x, Windows NT Advanced Server, Microsoft LAN Manager, Banyan Vines, IBM LAN Server, Windows for Workgroups, LANtastic and more. For large scale systems, we recommend our MSDS Internet Wizard which uses Microsoft Access for the database and allows for Internet MSDS retrieval.

Does the software work with non-windows based computers or operating systems?

We recommend our MSDS Internet Wizard for non-Windows based systems. The MSDS Wizard allows you to use an Internet browser to retrieve MSDSs in Adobe's PDF format which is compatible with Windows, Mac OS, and Unix Internet browser systems.

Does this software help with the 30 year archiving rule?

MSDS Wizard has an archiving section which will keep old revisions of your products in a separate place to avoid confusion and unnecessary build-up. These MSDSs can be viewed or printed from the archives at any time, without having to go through the current copies.

What type of scanning does the software utilize? Is it OCR?

It is not OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software. The software simply scans in a page as a graphic image and stores it. Our tests with OCR have been very inconsistent, especially with bad quality MSDSs which is very common.

What format is used for the scanned images?

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) using black and white Group IV compression which gets excellent compression results, or PDF. TIFFand PDF images can also be imported or exported directly from the software.

How much hard disk space will the scanned images take up?

The formula for computing hard disk space is as follows: 1 page takes an average of 60K, the average MSDS is 4 pages, the average MSDS takes 240K, 100 MSDS take up approx. 25 MB. These are averages only since the actual size is based on how well the images get compressed which is different for every page. These numbers are also on the high side of the average in order to give you a little bit of extra room to work with.

Isn't this a lot of hard drive space?

Not really. Hard drives have come down in price so dramatically over the past year that this has not been an issue.

Can the MSDSs be put on CD ROM or DVD?

Yes. Using a CD-Recordable drive or DVD-Recordable drive, MSDSs can be put on standard CD ROMs or DVDs and distributed or made available on a network. Safetec has a scanning service that can do this for you if you're not equipped with a CD-R/DVD-R drive.

Does your software have security? How does it work?

Yes, the software does have security. It allows you to choose what you want each user to do and not to do.

Can the software run completely from a network?

No, it can not be run entirely from the network. MSDS Wizard includes files that need to be registered on the local system therefor, it must be run from the local system.

Is a client /server version of your software available?

Not yet. A client/server version is in the making and should be ready soon.

What are the minimum computer requirements to run this software?

Please see our system requirements document for the exact minimum specifications and our recommendations.

What if the MSDS we have is a poor copy, like a fax?

The scanner makes a near identical copy, so it won't look any better when you print it out, however, you can use the software's Zoom feature to blow-up portions of the MSDS, and in many cases, you can read very fine print that is not readable to the naked eye. The software also comes with a MSDS request letter generator to help you request better copies of your MSDSs from the manufacturer.

My co-workers are not computer literate. How will they be able to use this system?

We have simple, graphical step-by-step instructions on how to find an MSDS. It is so easy, even computer novices will be able to easily find an MSDS.
