Technical notes
MSDS Scan Wizard accesses data in a file-based method using Visual Basic 3.0 as the development language and Microsoft Jet 2.5 as the database engine. All MSDS records have two components of data. One is a scanned MSDS image which is stored separately from the data in a system defined location and filename. If the MSDS has multiple pages, all of the pages are stored in the same file; the format of which is a multi-page TIFF using CCITT Group IV black and white compression. The average size of a single compressed page is 60K. The average MSDS has four pages making the average total 240K per MSDS or approximately 25 MB per 100 MSDSs. The second part of an MSDS record is the keywords used to identify and retrieve the MSDS record. This data is stored in a single Jet database file (WIZDATA.MDB). The archived data is stored in a separate Jet database file (ARCVDATA.MDB).

The WIZDATA.MDB file is stored in the DATA folder. Within the DATA folder are the following folders:
Archive - Contains the archive database file and archived MSDS documents
Export - Contains the results of an export
Reports - Contains documents from the documents tab
Other - Not used at this time
Images - Contains all the MSDS documents associated to the index data
The Image folder is divided into 20 separate volume folders labeled Vol1 - Vol20. Up to 500 MSDS documents will be stored in each folder. To determine which volume an MSDS is stored in, simply find the MSDS in the database and click on the Additional Information tab. On the right side of the form is the filename and volume name of the associated MSDS. A user generally doesn't need this information. A volume is assigned to an MSDS record based on the MasterMSDSID of the MSDS. 1-500 are stored in Vol1, 501-1000 in Vol2, 1001-1500 in Vol3, etc.

The MasterMSDSID link the data in the primary MSDS table (tblMSDS) to all information it corresponds to such as Locations, Properties and Ingredients. The MasterMSDSID is automatically added to newly created MSDS records. This counter can be modified. See "Advanced Settings" within the on-line help for more information about changing the MasterMSDSID counter.
